FACTS ABOUT THE REEFTON HOTEL

• Actually located at McMahon’s Creek … but that’s another story!
  
  
• The only commercial building in town
  
  
• Survived fires, storms and monumental brawls during the gold rush period
  
  
• Sole remaining structure from the days of the gold rush
  
  
• The first gold in Victoria was found in the region and once there was gold there just had to be a pub
  
  
• The first owner Joseph Bowden took out the license in 1886 but he probably sold liquor illegally before then
  
  
• As gold petered out in the Upper Yarra region he decided to move the pub into East Warburton but the story goes that when he got to the to the river and couldn’t get it across the bridge on the back of the bullock dray he left it where it was and said “Bugger it, this will do” (hence first point)
  
  
• Today the pub is a well known and popular stopping place for motor bike riders and car clubs heading for the Reefton Spur Road with its 165 bends in just 18 kilometers
