History of The Annandale Hotel
The Annandale Hotel has a long history in Sydney first opening its doors around the 1930s as a good old Aussie pub. In the early 1980s Peter Morris converted the hotel into a live music venue, adding a new address in music and establishing the venue as a Sydney institution in rock ‘n roll. In the late 1990s the venue experienced some turbulent years and in 1998 the pub was sold and the new owners removed live music from the pub and poker machines turned up in droves. This new format for the pub proved unsuccessful. At this point the Rule brothers were brought in to help turn the pub around. Within a year the brothers found themselves in a position to purchase The Annandale Hotel. Young brothers Matthew and Daniel Rule, after some years in the hotel industry were ready to branch out on their own and follow a passion close to their hearts….rock ‘n roll. The deal was sealed and in 2000 Matt & Dan found themselves the new owners of a Sydney institution. By March 2000 the brothers had reinstated live music, and in May 2000 Mothership Music took on the reins as the venue booking agent. After a sunny experience at Clovelly beach, a partnership of like-mindedness had formed. The story of The Annandale Hotel was reignited. Those first months saw John Butler, Front End Loader, Rocket Science, Sleepy Jackson, Youth Group and 78 Saab tread the boards of the small stage at the Parramatta Rd end of the main bar. By August 2000, just in time for the Sydney Olympics, the current stage was built and on an auspicious Friday night of that month The Superjesus christened the brand new stage and the rest is history. In the past six years The Annandale Hotel has seen bands from every genre and every level rock out on stage and pleasure audiences.
